Long departed from the hotel group that once went by his name, Ian Schrager has moved on to a relationship with Marriott International — a partnership whose fruits, the Edition Boutique Hotels, are a little more upscale than the earlier Schrager offerings, and a lot more stylish than the typical Marriott fare. Gramercy Park
You can call the Gramercy Park Hotel a "hip hotel" if you want to — it's just that these days hip means something very different from what it used to. Nowadays interiors as cold and white as upholstered ice are commonplace, and a hotel just isn't a proper boutique unless its lobby is overflowing with forced architectural whimsy and its bar is overflowing with the sort of people who exist only to be photographed at parties. Flatiron
The Roger, situated on Madison Avenue between the Flatiron and Murray Hill, is proof that with good taste and expert execution, an outstanding boutique hotel needs no highfalutin, top-to-bottom lifestyle concept. It's not hard to imagine the hoteliers' thought process: "We've got a gorgeous old building in a great location; we'll hire a sharp Manhattan designer to do a top-to-bottom sprucing-up; we'll get pretty spendy with the bedding, the TVs, the bath products and all the little details; and the service will be great." Gramercy Park
Quite the opposite of what the New York hotel world has become, the Inn at Irving Place is like a snapshot of an entirely different era—a pair of 1834 townhouses without so much as a sign to mark its presence, it's as far as you can get from the shiny glamour of the big-money hotels, and miles more authentic than the mock history of the downtown hotspots, with their carefully applied patina and assembly-line antiques. Union Square
Hard to believe an architectural gem of the Beekman's stature went neglected for so many years, but we're happy to report that it's back in business, and it's been put to the best possible use. (We would say that, wouldn't we?) The Beekman, a Thompson boutique hotel, is an Old New York original, an 1881-vintage skyscraper from the days when a skyscraper meant nine stories of terraced red brick. With the advent of the Hyatt Union Square New York, this neighborhood at the upper edge of downtown Manhattan has suddenly taken a leap toward the upscale.
